In the beginning of Yuga chakra, i.e. prior to Adi krutayuga, Sanaka Sanandana Brahma manasa putras (Four sons of Brahma who took birth because of his mere thought) visited Vaikuntapura to have the darshan of Lord Vishnu. They were obstructed by Jaya- Vijaya, the dwarapalakas of Vaikuntapura . Even after persuasion, dwarapalakas didn’t allow them into vaikuntapura . Enraged by their adamant behavior, Brahma manasa putras cursed them to take birth on earth. Immediately dwarapalakas approached Lord Vishnu for pardon (shapa vimochana). Lord Vishnu gave them the option of either taking seven births as good souls or three births as evil souls and get liberated. In order to get rid of the curse as soon as possible, they desired for three births as rakshasas because their intention behind choosing asura yoni was due to the reason that they can reach back to Vaikuntapura - as soon as possible - back in to the service of almighty Lord Vishnu . Thus they took birth as Hiranya Kashyapa - Hiranyaksha in Adi krutayuga, as Ravana - Kumbhakarna in Adi tretayuga and as Shishupala - Dantavaktra in Dwaparayuga.
Lord Vishnu took the avataras of Varaha, Nrusimha, Rama and Krishna to liberate them as per the boon that he granted to them. Thus this incident proves that even a curse to the servant of Lord Vishnu becomes a boon and proves that Shri Hari is "Bhakthavatsala".
Hiranya Kashyapa - Hiranyaksha took birth in the womb of Diti, wife of Kashyapa Prajapathi. Their very Rakshasa nature is ascribed to their mother's desire. One evening when Kashyapa Prajapathi was doing tapasya Diti approaches him with the desire of indulging in physical relationship which Kashyapa refuses and tells her that even a husband and wife should not indulge in physical interaction in sandhya samaya and pratharmadhyahna samaya that is from sun rise to sun set. But Diti was in no mood to heed to the advise of Kashyapa and insisted upon fulfilling her desire .Taking that as the decision of Brahman - vidhi - Kashyapa obliged Diti. And thus Hiranya Kashyapa - Hiranyaksha entered in to the womb of Diti at an inauspicious asura samaya acquiring rakshasa gunas. This is the reason why Jaya - Vijaya, the divine dwarapalakas of Vaikuntapura get Rakshasa guna. Hiranyaksha, one day starts on Vishwa Vijaya yatra, rolls the flat Earth in to a globe and throws it in to the anantha sagara. Upon the prayer of Bhudevi, the consort of Lord Vishnu, Lord Vishnu takes the avatar of "Ugra Varaha ".The Varaha enters in the Anantha sagara and lifts the Earth on his snout. Enraged by this act Hiranyaksha attacks Bhu-Varaha Swamy. Bhu-Varaha Swamy kills Hiranyaksha and liberates him. Upon the advice of Rakshasa Guru Shukracharya Hiranya Kashyapa undertook an onerous Tapasya to please Brahma and get boon that could empower him to defeat all the gods and kill Lord Vishnu to take the revenge for his brothers death. Frightened by his ghora tapasya, Indra tries his level best to disrupt the tapasya of Hiranya Kashyapa but in vain. Pleased by the tapasya of Hiranya Kashyapa Brahma emerges and sprinkles the tapo jala on the ant-hill that formed around Hiranya Kashyapa in due course of his ghora tapasya. The well built body of the asura becomes a mere skeleton which again regained not only the original shape but also, Gajabala, tremendous energy. Brahma says that he was pleased with the ghora tapasya of Hiranya Kashyapa and grants him a boon of his choice. Hiranya Kashyapa asks boon for immortality for which Brahma says that as he himself was not immortal ,hence it was not in his capacity to grant the same .Brahma advises Hiranya Kashyapa to go for an alternate boon Brahma is compelled to give him boon due to his Ghora Tapasya. Then Hiranya Kashyapa asked for a boon where in he should not be killed by Devatas, Danavas, Manushyas, Gandharva, Kinnera, Kimpurusha, Yaksha, Rakshasa, Naga, Pakshi, Janthusamuha, not by any weapon, neither in the day nor in the night, neither inside a room nor in the open, neither by anything dead nor alive . Then Brahma gives him that boon and disappears by advising him not to misuse the same or else his boon would become bane indicating that his boon cannot stop Lord Vishnu from exercising his authority in uplifting the Dharma . With this boon Hiranya Kashyapa returns to his capital Hiranyapuri. In the mean time when asura was doing tapasya Indra abducts Hiranya Kashyapa’s wife Leelavathi as she was pregnant fearing that another child like Hiranya Kashyapa could take birth. On his way to Indrapuri, Indra comes across Narada, who persuades Indra and takes Leelavathi to his hermitage. There Devarshi Narada daily tells Bhagavatha kathas to Leelavathi. Because of asura sangatya with her husband she used to sleep at the time of discourses but her son in the womb used to give a serious hearing. After Hiranya Kashyapa's arrival from tapovana, Narada hands over Leelavathi and the newly born male child to Hiranya Kashyapa. The child was named as Prahlada by Narada. As he grows up, Prahlada becomes an ardent Vaishnava because of Narada upadesha. At Gurukula, his teachers Chanda and Amarka teaches only Dharma, Artha and Kama as was the order of Hiranya Kashyapa. But Prahlada was interested in only Moksha. After lots of persuasion they fail to convince Prahlada that Hiranya Kashyapa was the real Lord of the Universe. After few days Hiranya Kashyapa calls Prahlada to his court with the natural enthusiasm of any father. He asks Prahlada that what he understood from the discourses of his gurus. Prahlada replies to Hiranya Kashyapa that only Vishnu is the almighty of the universe and none else. infuriated by his stubborn answers and adamant nature Hiranya Kashyapa threatens Prahlada to mend his ways and sends him back to school. One day the teachers assign the class to a class leader and go for sandhya vandana. In the mean time Prahlada was asked by his classmates that why he never accepts the supremacy of his father over the universe .Prahlada replies that what ever is taught to them in the school was wrong and the fact was that Lord Vishnu is the real Lord of the universe. Upon inquiring that how he came to know this Prahlada replies that he was given this knowledge by Devarshi Narada. Taking cue from Prahlada the other classmates, who happened to be rakshasas, starts dancing to the tunes of "Jaya Govinda" and "Shriman Narayana". Upon the return from ahnika Chanda - Amarka gets panicked by the prevailing scene and runs to the court of Hiranya Kashyapa and request him to call back Prahlada as he was also spoiling his co-students with Vishnu-Bhakthi. Hiranya Kashyapa summons Prahlada and asks for explanation for which Prahlada ascertains that what ever he was teaching to his classmates was correct an in fact his teachers were wrongly presenting Dharma. Annoyed by Prahlada's behavior Hiranya Kashyapa orders Dandanayaka to punish Prahlada in as many ways until Prahlada accepts superiority of Hiranya Kashyapa over Lord Narayana. Prahlada was put to arduous tortures. He was made to walk on fire, was put in hot boiling oil. He was thrown from the top of the cliff and in to the ocean. He was lashed with whips, poisoned, but nothing affected Prahlada as at every step Lord Vishnu was protecting Prahlada . Hiranya Kashyapa wonders that why nothing was harming Prahlada and asks the same to his son .Prahlada says that he is being protected by He, who protects every one in their mothers womb . Finally Hiranya Kashyapa demands Prahlada to show Vishnu. Upon his answer that Lord Vishnu is Sarvantaryami (Omnipresent), the Asura points to a Pillar (STHAMBHA) and asks Prahlada whether Vishnu was there in it? Prahlada says ‘yes’ and Hiranya Kashyapa breaks Sthambha with his fist. From it emerges the “Pralaya Bheekara Narasimhavatara”. Neither the lion, nor human, Nruhari, takes Hiranya Kashyapa to the threshold of sabhamantapa – neither in side the room nor in to the open. Puts him on his lap- neither on the ground nor in the sky and tears his chest with his Vajra Nakhas (Diamond edged nails) which are not conventional weapons as well they are neither alive nor dead . Thus fulfilling Brahmas boon, Lord Vishnu, The Nrusimha, kills Hiranya Kashyapa and rescues Prahlada declaring in unequivocal terms that the devotes of Lord Vishnu will be ever saved and rescued by the Lord Himself.
